Arkabutla Lake Nature Center

Nestled in the wood at the crest of a hillock overlooking Arkabutla Lake, the proposed ARKabutla Lake Wildlife Rehabilitation and Nature Center grows out of the land to form a sanctuary in which wildlife can be rehabilitated and visitors can fully experience the beauty, wonder and peace of Nature. Visitors will experience a wide range of educational visual, olfactory, tactile and acoustical experiences as they transition from the built environment into the natural environment. The facilities are designed to blur the lines between ‘outside-and-inside’ by using courtyards and strategically placed windows to capture key views and to provide a constant visual reminder of the surrounding natural environment. The proposed project is planned in accordance with the most current LEED guidelines for a sustainable design with a minimal negative impact on the natural environment, using available technology for enhanced daylighting, energy efficiency and improved indoor environmental quality. These features will also help reduce long-term operating and maintenance costs, which can be critical to the facility’s on-going success and viability. The improved indoor air quality will also prove beneficial to the rehabilitated wildlife, as these may be ultra sensitive to chemical pollutants. As a LEED project, the new facility will also be designed and constructed to minimize construction waste and pollution of surrounding sites both now, and into the future.
